| Posted: 20 Oct 2019 05:05 PM PDT Bruce Springsteen discusses new documentary "Western Stars" and writing new music, while his wife, fellow musician Patti Scialfa, reveals why she was so surprised when she watched the film. (Oct. 17) AP, AP FREEHOLD, New Jersey – The hometown screening got a hometown surprise. The audience at the AMC Loews Freehold Metroplex Cinema got a special introduction to a screening of Bruce Springsteen's "Western Stars" from the Boss himself on Saturday. "We knew we weren't going to tour, so I tried to figure out a way to get the music to you," Springsteen said. He added, "If you have applause, if there are any, I would save it for the end of the film because the editing and the pacing of the film has its own message." "Thanks for coming out, thanks for supporting me all these years and enjoy 'Western Stars'," Springsteen told the cheering audience. Springsteen introduced two showings of "Western Stars" at the multiplex on Saturday, according to multiple attendees. Trump mocks Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and Jay-Z: Then he oddly complimented the Boss This Springsteen superfan has been to 150 shows: Now he has a movie, 'Blinded by the Light' "We were wondering why the lights came back up, and then there was Bruce!" said Stan Goldstein, co-author of "Rock & Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore." "I never expected it. He just introduced the movie, asked us not to applaud. He was with Thom Zimny (the film's co-director with Springsteen). Everyone in the theater was floating on air after that surprise. What a great way to set up the movie for us and in his hometown." "Western Stars" is a concert film shot in a barn in front of a small audience on the rocker's property in Colts Neck, not far from Freehold. Vignettes starring a solo Springsteen, set in the Southwest and California, preface performances of the songs of "Western Stars," released as an album in June. "Bruce continues to reveal the more vulnerable side of himself to us through 'Western Stars,' said Laura Maimone, who attended the screening with husband Pete Maimone. "It's part of his life journey that we are fortunate to be a part of. The journey continues, as does ours each day. It's another intimate experience and a memory to last a lifetime." A second Fathom Events screening is scheduled for Wednesday. The movie officially hits theaters on Friday. | 'The Lion King' Fans Respond to Elton John's Criticism - Showbiz Cheat Sheet Posted: 19 Oct 2019 06:13 AM PDT With the success of Disney's 2019 adaptation of The Lion King, there were sure to be a few critics. One of whom was Sir Elton John, who had a role in creating the music for the original animated movie. What are fans of Beyoncé and The Lion King saying about Elton John's interview response? Here's what we know. Sir Elton John said the 2019 version of 'The Lion King' was 'a huge disappointment'The soundtrack for the original version of The Lion King was written in part by artist, Sir Elton John. During an interview with GQ Magazine, Elton John shared his thoughts on the 2019 live-action adaptation of Disney's animated classic. Needless to say, the review caused some controversy. "The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me, because I believe they messed the music up," Sir Elton John said. "Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn't have the same impact." "The magic and joy were lost," he continued. "The soundtrack hasn't had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the best-selling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success. I wish I'd been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn't really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad. I'm so happy that the right spirit for the music lives on with the Lion King stage musical." Some Beyoncé and 'The Lion King' fans disagreed with Elton JohnThis version of The Lion King's soundtrack features African artists and African influences. That is especially true of Beyoncé's single "Spirit," which appears on both The Lion King's soundtrack and The Lion King: The Gift. Some fans took notice of this, commenting on the new album on social media. "What's different this time round is that the soundtrack was filled with African artists, who are beyond [Sir Elton John's] ears nor does he understand their impact. Yes it might not have had the commercial success that you would expect, [however,] the impact of some of the songs were felt in black culture," said one Twitter user. "No, it was just not as moving as the original soundtrack. I listen to plenty of African music and some are good, some are bad. I don't know what kind of reasoning this is. Music is music. This soundtrack is not immune from criticism because it's African-inspired," replied another Twitter user. Beyoncé has not yet commented on Sir Elton John's interviewNot surprisingly, Beyoncé has not yet commented on the situation. In the past, the artist described adding elements of African culture into the music. Particularly, the music of The Lion King: The Gift features producers and artists from Africa, creating songs inspired by Disney's classic. The Lion King's official soundtrack and The Lion King: The Gift are both available on Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, and most major streaming platforms. The Lion King will be available for purchase on DVD, Blu Ray, and Ultra 4K HD on Oct. 22, 2019. |
| Posted: 16 Oct 2019 12:31 PM PDT Elton John came down hard on Disney's remake of "The Lion King" from earlier this year, calling the film a "huge disappointment" and saying that the creative team specifically "messed the music up" that he wrote for the original animated film. The legendary pop star sat for an interview with British GQ and said the "magic and joy were lost" from the new film, and he wished he was more involved in the creative process. "The new version of 'The Lion King' was a huge disappointment to me, because I believe they messed the music up," John told the magazine on Sunday. "Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn't have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost." Jon Favreau's live-action remake of "The Lion King" used John's music that he co-wrote with lyricist Tim Rice, including the songs "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," "Be Prepared," "Hakuna Matata," "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" and "Circle of Life," and John and Rice actually wrote a new song called "Never Too Late" that appeared during the film's ending credits. Pharrell Williams ultimately oversaw the music for the new film and its soundtrack, updating some of Rice's lyrics and John's music, naturally with new recordings by the film's stars Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner. And Beyoncé contributed a new song for the film and soundtrack called "Spirit." Despite those heavy hitters, John was further disappointed the film's soundtrack didn't have the same chart-topping success as the original. "The soundtrack hasn't had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the bestselling album of the year," he said. "The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success. I wish I'd been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn't really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad. I'm so happy that the right spirit for the music lives on with the 'Lion King' stage musical." Still, his upbeat, Motown-influenced track "Never Too Late" would be eligible for the Best Original Song category at this year's Oscars, where John would have to compete not only with Beyoncé, but also another of his own tracks written for the biopic "Rocketman."
