Joe Carnahan suggests Disney rehire James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after the film was put on indefinite hold due to the recent controversy surrounding the director. The Marvel filmmaker known for his work in Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was shockingly fired by Disney last month after his almost decade-old offensive tweets were unearthed. The issue remains divisive for fans and is still a hot topic online, but for context, Gunn has publicly apologized for the unacceptable social media posts and took responsibility for them, accepting Disney's decision, but that doesn't mean his fan base has.
Prior to the controversy, Gunn was busy working on writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as he provided regular updates about his progress. While it was never confirmed, many presumed that the threequel was supposed to roll out May 2020 as part of MCU's Phase 4. But now that the biggest creative force behind the film is no longer involved, it is currently in limbo while Marvel Studios begins the hunt for Gunn's replacement.

Chiming in on the conversation, Carnahan took it to his Twitter account to offer advice to Disney with regard to their Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 woes. Calling it an "instant fix," the A-Team director suggested the company simply take back Gunn to work on the Marvel movie. Interestingly, one fan asked Carnahan if he would return if he was in Gunn's position, and if he was offered his old job back, to which he straightforwardly answered yes. Check out his tweet below:
Carnahan isn't the only one who has that opinion. Since the scandal broke out, several of his peers in the industry have come out to vocally stand by Gunn. The Guardians cast penned an open letter expressing their support for the filmmaker. Kurt Russell, as well as David Hasselhoff, who both worked with Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. separately made it known that they're backing the troubled filmmaker. Fans have also come together and launched an online petition for Gunn's rehiring, and while campaigns like this don't have a good success rate, it's a testament to how much support Gunn is getting amidst this debacle.
Having said that, it's not necessarily easy to just rehire Gunn, especially after everything that has come out. For a time, many people were hoping that Disney would backtrack their decision. However, that doesn't seem to be the case as the House of Mouse is standing by their decision to let go of Gunn, and that decision came after a meeting between the filmmaker and head of Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn. This makes it more difficult for them to reinstate the director considering that they just doubled down on their initial choice to sever ties with him.
